The Robot

Daedaelus

The 2022 Islanders Robot was named "Daedaelus" because it was trying to "fly" using a set of climbing arms to let the robot climb "monkey bars" into the hangar.  There were two "fixed" arms with spring-loaded hooks which would hold the robot on a bar while the two climber arms would reach out for the next bar.

The robot used tank drive wheels and included a spinning ball intake which directed the balls through the middle of the robot to a "backward-facing" compression launcher.

Originally, the launcher was designed to have an adjustable hood to allow for different launching angles for the ball, but we found that it worked fine with just one angle and it was more-robust without the mechanism for adjusting the hood.

The biggest challenge with the robot came from the pulleys which controlled the arms.  Sometimes one of the two pulleys would pinch its own rope, which made it behave like its rope was much shorter than the other arm.  This made the arms get out of sync with each other.

Overall, Daedalus was a very solid and successful robot!

In Match 78, we had a good climb and also demonstrated the robot's drive power by pushing away another robot which was trying to interfere.
